Faster and Higher – That’s Maine’s Flyer

The Niles Historical and Cultural Center‘s newest exhibit called Faster and Higher – That’s Maine’s Flyer opened on March 31, 2022. The exhibit tells the story of a C-54 Skymaster airplane nicknamed the Maine Flyer. In December 1944, students at Maine Township High School (Maine East) raised $551,000 dollars in bonds for the naming and construction of the C-54 built by Douglas Aircraft at Mannheim and Higgins. 75 years later, Len Johnson salvaged parts off the plane from an aircraft “graveyard” in Arizona. Those artifacts and more will be on display through March 2023 at the NHCC.
