Maine Flyer Exhibit in Development at NHCC

The Niles Historical and Cultural Center is developing a new exhibit about the saga of a C-54 Skymaster airplane know as the Maine Flyer. In 1944, students at Maine Township High School (Maine East) raised over $500,000 dollars in bonds for the naming and construction of the C-54 built by Douglas Aircraft at Mannheim and Higgins. 75 years later, Len Johnson saved parts of the plane from an aircraft “graveyard” in Arizona. Those artifacts and more will be on display this Spring at the NHCC.

ARE YOU A MAINE EAST ALUM? if so contact us at (847) 390-0160 or dsmaczny@vniles.com. We’re looking to add Maine East artifacts to our collection.
